Allow me to share the captivating story behind the creation of my beloved "MOXIE" Honda CB550 Café Racer. I may have come to motorcycles a bit later in life, but the moment I purchased my first bike, a Honda Shadow 600, a world of passion and purpose was unveiled before me. Little did I know that my journey would lead me to the realm of cafe racers, where my skills as an engineer would intertwine with my desire for artistic expression and craftsmanship.
It all started when I stumbled upon a 1978 Honda CB750 cafe racer, which I affectionately named "Harma," the Greek word for chariot. With my internship money in hand, I dove headfirst into transforming Harma into a cafe racer that reflected my vision. Breaking down the motorcycle and understanding its inner workings became an addictive experience.
As I completed the project, a new realization dawned upon me—I wanted to be more involved in the customization process, to create something from scratch that would truly embody my personal touch.
That's when the 1974 Honda CB550 entered the scene, marking the next step in my journey. With the lessons learned from Harma, I embarked on a mission to challenge myself further in the realm of custom fabrication. But there was another aspect I wanted to focus on—budgeting. After investing a significant amount in the CB750K, I aimed to build the "MOXIE" Honda CB550 for under $2,500, demonstrating that passion and resourcefulness can go hand in hand.
"Moxie," a name that encapsulates the spirit and boldness of this blue motorcycle cafe racer, was featured in the renowned Handbuilt Show in 2023. However, I can assure you that it bears no resemblance to what one might expect from a budget build. The vast majority of the work was done by my own hands, as I undertook several firsts with the CB550, including adding knee dents, painting the tank and tail, spoking the wheels, and even pinstriping.
Choosing the perfect color was a critical decision. My wife, who possesses an exceptional eye for detail, played an integral role in selecting a color that exuded a subtle vintage aesthetic. Rustoleum Nantucket Blue emerged as the ideal choice, and with my determination and SprayMax 2K clear coat in hand, I set out to bring the vision to life. The process presented a slight learning curve, but as imperfections were polished away, I became increasingly proud of the end result the "MOXIE" Honda CB550 radiating with a timeless allure.
Yet, the true joy of this custom creation lies not just in its appearance but in the way it rides. Having experienced both the CB750 and the CB550, I've discovered a newfound love for lighter bikes. Nimble and agile, the "MOXIE" Honda CB550 dances through turns with a grace that never fails to bring a smile to my face. While it may not outpace an R6 in a race, the sheer pleasure of riding it from point A to point B is unmatched.
Throughout this journey, I've realized that my growth as a builder extends beyond the tangible aspects of the bike itself. It's about pushing my skills and knowledge to new heights, venturing into metal shaping, machining, and TIG welding with my upcoming projects. In addition to offering exclusive club deals and discounts to its members, the project contributes 5% of membership revenue to the Smith Family, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children. As a cherry on top, all members have the opportunity to win custom motorcycles like the "Blue Diablo" and future creations.
To celebrate the launch of the club and set the stage for the exciting things to come, Shannon turned to the renowned Wenley Moto Design to craft an exceptional giveaway prize that would captivate the hearts of custom bike enthusiasts. The objective was clear—to create a race-inspired Thruxton R cafe racer that would fulfill their collective desires for an exceptional ride.
With the Thruxton R secured, the transformation process began. The stock tank remained in place, showcasing a perfectly spaced speed-hole-adorned metal strap. However, the majority of the bodywork underwent a stunning custom overhaul courtesy of Wenley Moto Design. A handmade front fairing was introduced, lending the bike a truly race-ready appearance. The minimalist custom fender effortlessly floats over the front tire, while the pièce de resistance lies in the reworked and re-painted tail section, perfectly embodying the essence of a cafe racer.
The "Blue Diablo" Triumph Thruxton R demanded a color scheme as striking as its design. Inspired by the world of supercars, the team studied Porsche models and settled upon the mesmerizing Rivera Blue, reminiscent of the Porsche 911 GT3. Against the backdrop of blacked-out engine and components, this captivating color choice elevates the "Blue Diablo" to a realm of its own. Simple graphics, featuring the number 5, pay homage to Jack Marshall, who rode a Triumph to victory in the 1908 Isle of Man TT.
Every detail of the "Blue Diablo" was meticulously considered, including the creation of the remarkable seat. Wenley Moto Design crafted an exquisite Black Alcantara seat, painstakingly stitched together with thread that matches the bike's paint. Performance was not overlooked, as lightweight wheels from BST Diamond Tek 5 Carbon were chosen to reduce unsprung weight, with a wider 180 rear wheel providing an imposing stance. Complementing the Thruxton R's already impressive Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes, this blue motorcycle cafe racer handles with unparalleled precision.
Under the hood, the engine received a boost, with S&F waterproof air filters and an airbox delete enhancing the intake. Rear rewiring was undertaken, while Wenley Moto Design's craftsmanship extended to crafting a set of 1-7/8in pipes that culminate in a shotgun-style design beneath the tail section. With the inclusion of a Black Box installation to retain electronic functions and an engine control module from Tune Boy, the "Blue Diablo" Triumph Thruxton R unleashes an impressive 96 horsepower after fine-tuning on the dyno. Additional features such as a lithium battery, black finned covers, and a matching chain with Superlite RSX sprocket further enhance the bike's performance and aesthetics.

Mo View Café mirrors adorn the clip-on bars, accompanied by an ST Speedster gauge positioned between the relocated ignition and reservoir. Illumination comes courtesy of a High Sider Bates 5-¾ LED headlight, with a meticulously installed custom tray concealing the wiring at the rear. Mo-Blaze Motogadget front and rear indicators provide functional style, while a custom number plate holder and tail light complete the bike's clean and sleek appearance. The end result is an absolute masterpiece that leaves onlookers in awe, though one can only imagine the dedication and cost required to bring such a creation to life.
